Loeb Drama Center, 64 Brattle Street in Cambridge
In collaboration with the American Repertory Theatre, the Cultural Services of the French Consulate in Boston is excited to announce a soirée celebrating the eighteenth century French play by Pierre Marivaux,
Island of Slaves. The A.R.T will be producing a contemporary mise-en-scene
Island of Slaves this spring (May 13 to June 11), newly translated by Gideon Lester, Associate Artistic Director of the ART.
Members of the French Library are invited to a special evening held on May 13, 2006, the opening night of the performance! This soirée will begin with a reception offered by the French Consulate at 6:00pm with drinks and hors d’oeuvres accompanied by a presentation by Gideon Lester. The doors to the theatre will open at 7:30, and you are cordially invited to enjoy the Island of Slaves at 8:00pm. For the members of the French Library, the A.R.T will be offering a special 2-for-1 discount for the soirée held on May 13, 2006 only.
A.R.T. audiences first met Marivaux’s glittering, savage wit in
La Dispute. Now Robert Woodruff, one of the country’s most versatile stage directors, heads the production of
Island of Slaves, a comic masterpiece that puts social norms and boundaries under the microscope. The satire begins when four shipwreck survivors stumble onto a remote beach. Two were servants, two masters, but the laws of the island require that they switch roles. Once the trappings of wealth have been dashed on the rocks, power and love are up for grabs. http://www.amrep.org/slaves/ .
The American Repertory Theatre is holding the performance at the Loeb Drama Center, located at 64 Brattle Street in Cambridge. Acclaimed as ’’One of the three best theatres in the country!’’ by TIME magazine, the A.R.T. is a not-for-profit resident theatre, founded by Robert Brustein. Active since 1966, the A.R.T. is a professional producing organization and a theatrical training conservatory. http://www.amrep.org/.
